Design Style Spotlight – Rustic Modern

Recently we’ve been designing quite a few mountain homes, so we thought we’d share a little about a popular style that we are loving right now- Rustic Modern.  Of course, rustic modern stems from the classic rustic style (think log cabin, wood paneling, and cozy traditional furniture), but this style mixes in elements from styles like mid-century, industrial, and contemporary to add a touch of luxe.

Rustic Design:

Rustic Modern takes the more traditional rustic style that you see often in mountain cabins and lodges and adds the modern touches. Think complete modern refresh on a traditional mountain home.  These homes tend to be heavily paneled in warmer tones on both the walls and the ceilings.  In addition to wood paneling, there is often stone detailing and large beams.  Furniture-wise, you see a lot of natural wood pieces, leather, and cozy warm colors combined with the wood, stone and white tones.

We designed this mountain home a couple years ago, and as you can see it leans more into a more classic rustic style. We love the railing they chose!
For this rustic mountain home in the NC mountains, we used a lot of warm tones and natural wood furniture (this is a peek at the log furniture pieces!) which complements the rustic architectural details such as the wood ceiling liner, wainscoting, and the stone fireplace.

Modern Rustic:

One of the main differences in modern rustic is the type of furniture- usually featuring modern or transitional pieces.   The modern furniture will contrast with the rustic architecture, but you can also create juxtaposition by adding some classic rustic pieces like a wood accent chair or live edge table.

Modern Rustic design for a basement rec room. We love the dark wood tones for these homes if you can’t tell! The modern forms really accent the rustic pieces.

Another difference that you can see is a change in color palette.  In traditional cabins, you see A LOT of the warm honey tones in the woodwork.  In modern homes you have more variety in wood tones – you often see more neutral and dark woods rather than the classic honey. This style still uses those earthy tones like green, red, yellow, and orange- but often in a more subtle way. There is a lot of layering, and yet the modern style compliments this with the sleeker forms.

Above image features one of our favorite modern rustic material palettes. The cut-velvet fabric in the center ties together the warmth of the wood tones and the cooler toned fabrics.

This style is also influenced by the Industrial style in some ways.  In industrial, you have a lot of architectural detailing such as exposed steel beams, open spaces, and metal accents. These are all things that can be seen in rustic modern as well.  Rustic Modern usually features high ceilings, expansive windows, white or neutral walls, and often forgo the more traditional wood wainscotting.

This client leans more modern and loves neutral and cool tones. We went with a sandy taupe wood tone to keep the space light while not going too far into the gray family. We also used some deep and dark woods to pop – look at those kitchen cabinets!
We introduced color through accessories rather than in the main elements of the space; that way the mountain views are the star of the show, no matter the season.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on Modern Rustic! Would you want a mountain getaway in this style?
