We’re finally hanging artwork in the DC Design House Living Room and couldn’t be more excited to share! At the onset of our design plans, we knew the Living Room we were designing was best suited for clean, sharp white walls. This allowed us to modernize the space by lessening the impact of the molding, and provided the perfect ground for dramatic art. We can’t wait for you to see the pieces in person while touring the DC Design House this October. Until then here is a little more about the art that inspired our designs…
When we started the journey of sourcing artwork for the DC Design House, we began with Susan Calloway Fine Arts whom we have adored and trusted for years. Her gallery specializes in contemporary art by local, regional, and international artists including David Bell. We were immediately drawn to the Bell’s stunning black and white mixed media art. For the 2017 living room, Bell custom created ‘Day Dream’, which hangs just above the sofa against those crisp white walls.
As you enter the Living Room, your eye will catch a striking piece created by Liza Hathaway Matthews called ‘It’s Just a Feeling”. The specially commissioned artwork draws you into the formal Living Room, while playing to the rich fabrics and custom drapery that adorn floor to ceiling sun lit windows.
The next featured artist, Nicole Cohen, has some of the most interesting photography. Her work is positioned at the crossroads of contemporary reality, personal fantasy, and culturally constructed space. When we first saw Cohen’s ‘Resort 2016’ photograph we instantly fell in love. The coloration of the models’ dresses is quite stunning with the room’s textiles. The fresh pop of pink plays to the next feature which adds whimsy to this formal living room.
The prominently featured ‘Meltaway’ sculpture by Desire, Obtain, Cherish aka Johnathan Paul adds an unexpected pop of color to the room. You’ll find the refreshing and bold sculpture sitting atop a centrally located Niermann Weeks table.
The final piece of art selected for the DC Design House is ‘Adrift Coco’ by Palaceck. The intricate hand-shaped coco wood petal forms are finished in off-white tones. Sculptural in nature, this piece creates impact, despite its lack of color.
There is nothing quite like finding artwork that is not only inspiring, but that effortlessly suits the design of a room. As you take in the artwork of the beautifully designed DC Design House, we hope you’ll find pieces that capture you, allowing you to get lost in the beauty of the artist’s work.
The 2017 DC Design House is open from September 30 through October 29. For ticket information, hours and a list of events, visit dcdesignhouse.com.
Stay inspired,

The Washington, DC Design House, a 501(c)3 nonprofit entity, began in 2008 as a unique design show house event for the DC Metro area in which top area designers showcased their talents into a “flowing design home” to raise funds for a local charity. What began as a single event goal to raise funds for Children’s National Health System has developed into the region’s foremost annual residential design attraction and as a leading annual fundraiser event for Children’s National Health System.
