Marine Layer: Saving the Environment One Old Shirt at a Time
Do you have a beloved old T-Shirt that you know is past its prime but cannot bare to part with? If yes, allow me introduce you to Marine Layer, a company that feels good for both you and your conscience. What began with a girlfriend throwing away a longtime favorite shirt has given way to a bi-coastal environmentally conscious clothing company that delivers the soft casual, wear-all-week long kinda t-shirts.
Although owner and founder Mike Natenshon struck success with their signature fabric, MicroModal, for its unreal softness thanks to the sustainable process of incorporating recycled beechwood pulp and “sueding”, essentially taking sandpaper to provide a smoother finished product, he wanted to further push the envelope. Setting out to fulfill his original goal of creating the best possible shirt in the most responsible way, the Marine Layer Re-Spun collection was launched in November of 2018.
The Re-Spun Collection is Marine Layer’s latest addition to up-cycling clothing by calling on customers to send in old T-Shirts, no matter the stained and frayed condition from years of love, to be broken down and re-spun into new shirts. In exchange for their donation Marine Layer sends a $5 credit for a future purchase as their way of saying thanks for helping the environment. The old customer-donated T-shirts will then be transformed and given new life as they form the foundation for the new collection.
With the Re-Spun collection launching April 28th of this year there have already been over 70,000 old T-shirts donated to help create a more sustainable fashion industry. The collection is limited in nature, for the time being, offering 8 shirts in total ranging from $62 to $92.
What better way to help the earth while simultaneously cleaning out your closet, something we have all been meaning to do for years, and getting some cash back towards a ridiculously soft shirt. Sounds like a win-win to us!
